Alpheus N. Andrus writes about the living conditions of the various tribes in the regions of Eastern Turkey, Syria and Iran whose tents are snowed in. He also mentions the lack of roads and the government's promise to build them (1911 Feb 21). He recommends to William Peet's Pera friend a book that one of his pupils (Isya Joseph) wrote for a PhD Dissertation at Harvard, completed in 1909: "The Devil Worshippers: their Sacred Books and Traditions of the Yezidiz" (Mardin, 1911 Jan 22). The government will not allow teachers sent over to the Yezidis as they are a "branch of Islam that has been led astray by corrupt teachers." 70 Yezides were imprisoned in Midyat, one of whom falsely accused of killing an officer (Mardin, 1910 Nov 20). In another letter, "the government is as weak and corrupt as in the worst days of the Hamidian regime" (Mardın, 1910 Dec 5). He notes the agitation started within the town due to insufficient water, he surmises agitationg is in fact intended to injure the Christian community (the majority). He explains the ways in which the water would be caught, retained and distributed (1910 Nov 5). A bill from Pharmacie I. Kénan (Constantinople, 1911 Jan 15): a lot of oxygen. Allen asks Peet what she should do with the Avedaper Controversary. An undated letter from Ellen Allen conveys Herbert Allen's confirmation not to publısh the "Orient" the week of Jan 4 (He dies Jan 25).
